Montgomery Botanical Gardens Garden Photography Class Draws Enthusiastic Crowd

A recent class entitled Capturing Beauty in Your Garden with Photography drew a crowd eager to learn new techniques for creating vibrant photos of all that grows in our gardens. The class, taught by Jewell Pitts, was held in the Montgomery Botanical Gardens Wisdom Wood Outdoor Classroom on a beautiful April morning, perfect for capturing color, form, and texture through iPhone or Android photography.

Mrs. Pitts, who specializes in shooting blooming flowers, shared several tips with participants:

  • Make sure your lens is clean.
  • Simply look around and shoot small parts of things—a few leaves or a bloom.
  • Bend down to their level to photograph small children.
  • Take shots from different angles. You never know which angle will be the best.
  • Go close to your subject to take the picture. Do not zoom before taking the shot.

Mrs. Pitts offered a website for ordering canvases: canvasdiscount.com.

At the close of the class, Rose Winkler shared information for photographers who would like to enter their work in the Alabama National Fair in October. The Fair features several classes in  the photography categories. Information on entering the contest is available from Mrs. Winkler at 5782 Carriage Bard Lane, Montgomery, Alabama 36116.

The June Montgomery Botanical Gardens class will be Attracting Pollinators, taught by Sonya Moore, and will be held in the Wisdom Wood Outdoor Classroom on Saturday, June 8 at 10:00 am. Admission is free. There will be a butterfly release. Seating is available, but participants may wish to bring a folding chair. Water will be available.
