Participants enjoy Charlie “Tinman” Lucas sculpture workshops

The Montgomery botanical gardens through its Education and Grants committees sponsored two sessions of Sculpture Workshops on Saturday, May 28, 2022. The presentations were a huge success with each session filled. Evaluations of the workshop came in several forms, observation, verbal comments and oral accolades by students, parents, and community participants. Approximately fifty (50) individuals attended the event. Members of Delta Sigma Theta sorority served as hostesses for the event.

Participants gathered from several schools, school systems and communities including Montgomery Public Schools, Pike Road, Elmore County and Auburn City Schools. Noted schools were Booker T. Washington Magnet, Park Crossing, Pike Road, Auburn City and Elmore County School Systems.

Dr. Tyna D. Davis, President of the Montgomery Botanical Gardens greeted the groups at both sessions with a challenge and a special message for teachers, students, parents and citizens. The participants were also welcomed by Mrs. Maggie Stringer, Chair of the Education Committee and Beth Wicker, Chair of the Grants committee. A special message was delivered by Mrs. Ethel Boykins, Founder of the Montgomery Botanical Gardens and Dr. Elijah Pugh, who was a stalwart supporter of the event.

The Highlight and the reason for the event was to hear and be guided by the national and internationally renowned artist, Charlie “Tinman” Lucas. Additionally, Mr. Lucas brought several of his works and had them on display for “budding artists” to view. Below is a panoramic view of the activities and creativity on full display during the sessions.
